What makes a poker chip worth $70? and other n00b questions… (2 Viewers)

I too am a n00b and have lots of questions...

I do understand the buying and selling aspects of all this, but like @TX_Golf_N_Poker said, I get confused as to when sets are customized, or sold in part, or resold as a whole, I mean as was stated, if there is no counterfeiting, what's to stop someone from relabeling/milling a set with new labels and reselling for a premium since the set is super rare or coveted? I guess it becomes buyer beware?

Also, the huge sets acquired by many on here, surely they are just for a collection or are these sets being used regularly?
It would be pretty hard to fake chips for a counterfeit buy. Zero way to fake edgespots, and if the chips has the same edgespots, the price is prob in line with the high end chip. I would have zero worry in this department.

I have 10-12 sets, and all currently see felt in a rotation every week. So people with huge sets and multiples can use them regularly.

That’s a little presumptuous, don’t you think. :D
OK, you got me! :D We all know there are LOTS of dumb questions. But when one is asked, we're just going to pretend that it's not dumb, and answer it nicely. Please hold all sarcasm down to around level 4 or below...

Thanks! Hopefully what you are saying is that if someone did try to pass off a counterfeit set as something it was not, that the many of you who do know the difference would speak up, and not let some n00b like me buy it!

Also, I noticed that the auction I was referring to in the title (5 sample chips for $340 starting bid) has been cancelled. It seems the seller determined he was being a little overzealous.

When I was a kid, my mom always told me, “there are no dumb questions, only dumb little boys who ask questions.”

He's down to $19,249.99. But he still has to charge $49.75 for shipping (smh).

Agreed, you don't get custom chips hoping they gain value. The value is personalization (and to some extent security).

After reading a LOT on here about chips, the matter of security stimulated an interest thought for me.

I can totally understand the need for a fully customized personal chip set for cash and tourney play. If I were just using the dice chips from Wal-Mart ($19.95/100, 5 colors, this is not an ad), what keeps Jon from going down and buying a set and slipping a couple of green ones into the play? Done discreetly and slowly could do subtle damage to a game. Multiply that times the size and seriousness and the competitiveness of the private gane and it's easy to see where the security of customization might be important.

As a n00b here, I would love to hear more from the community on this. Thanks for letting me contribute.

wrt to counterfeiting; in the case of full, playable sets if you could produce something that looked and felt just like the original it would intrinsically be worth a lot. the only limit would be the question of the target chip set's scarcity. but an interesting example are the Binions.

Just to be clear, what I was referring to as counterfeiting was simply taking less valuable chips and placing facsimile labels from a more valuable chip onto them. An explanation has been given to my satisfaction that due to variances in chip colors and edge spots, as well as the fact that these valuable chips typically have inlays rather than labels, that this would not fool someone who knows what to look for.

In terms of counterfeits, there are only so many molds. You can't get Paulson molds (for the most part) and CPC doesn't make casino chips.

Yes, CPC owns the scrown mold, which was used for casino chips way back when, but the real TRK scrowns show wear/age that minty CPCs won't.

Also, reputable label vendors like @Gear will not produce labels of live chips.

Succinctly, the details will easily give away a fake and I think it would be hard to fake an expensive set...and likely a costly endeavor.

I WANT ANSWERS THEN.

I have been wrong before... Got pics?

Here's the first page of Ewing molds on Chip guide..

No, I was thinking of Horse Head mold. Don't have any concrete examples. Just what I remember seeing from chipguide and operating Indian casinos in Washington, Oregon, and California. Some of them must have replaced/reordered their chips since ASM officially closed operation and transitioned to CPC.

If it was easy to counterfeit chips, casinos wouldn't be using them. The successful* counterfeiting operations I've heard of involved inlay replacements and airbrush painting of low denom chips into high denom chips. These chips are then passed "a few to a rack" with a large number of legitimate chips. Gene Trimble (having direct experience with these counterfeits) stated they would never pass individual muster by a dealer familiar with the real chips.

There are certainly HH mold casino chips out there, but like TRK, none are current. There are 24 pages of HHR and ChipGuide. Here's the first page:

Did ASM make casino chips? Sure. Does CPC currently make casino chips? Not that I'm aware of.

There was a cable channel that had a series of shows related to cheating a casino and one was around counterfeit chips. I found an excerpt of the episode on youtube. Not sure if the full episode is available. Crazy how much they were able to get away with. Not sure how long ago this was, but it wasn't that long ago, maybe 1990's? Also has episodes on slot machines and other games.

Thanks for the topic TX, Ill bite... Anyone know of a good mini poker chip?

I like these but I cant find them in stock anywhere. Ive tried 22mm chips before and the size works well enough for me especially for how portable they are, but seeing these make me wonder if something thicker and heavier would handle nicer. Point me to a source for those or anything similar, Id much appreciate it.

Maybe @SUN-FLY Poker Chips ? Didn’t someone in the Prestige GB post pics of similar chips?

OK, gonna throw something new in here. More of a peeve than a question.

Abbreviations! There, I said it! For us n00bs, there are WAY too many abbreviations and acronyms used in this forum. It's very hard for us to understand what chips are being discussed sometimes. I once saw a post that defined SOME of them, but no where near all of them.

Here's the title of a post that was just placed:
Wanted BW 25c, $1, $20. And no additional details within the post either. Now yeah, it's a wanted post. And if I had what he wanted, I assume I would know what that meant. But I read lots of the wanted posts to learn about all the different chips, and to see what it is people want. Maybe I might want some of those too! If I had any idea what those were. And honestly, it would be even nicer if more of the wanted posts had pictures of what they were looking for. But these shorthand references are also being used in the general topic posts. With time and effort I am starting to figure out what some of them mean. But it's still frustrating.

Rant over. :D
