Let’s say one was to make a custom Chinese poker chip set, denominations in “units”. OFCP pineapple can play 3 max. I imagine a buyin around 200 units per player, something like
1 Unit, 25-30 pieces
5 Unit, 25-30 pieces
20 Unit, 20-25 pieces
100 Unit, 5 pieces

Thoughts?

I’ve been wondering this as well, with the bonuses and such - does a three unit denom make sense?

Me and my buddy play for quarters, usually for like 2-4 hours. Usually we’ll buy in for $10, I don’t think we’ve ever gotten more than $40 (160 units) on the two-person table.
Realistically, 100 units per player is plenty. So with typical overkill, 200 units per player is fine. My set has:
1 unit - 16 per player - seems perfect
4 units - 30 per player - way too many
20 units - 10 per player - pretty unnecessary, but fun to have a couple in play
100 units - 2 per player - completely unnecessary
400 units - 2 per player - inexcusably unnecessary.

edited to add, yes we play pineapple OFCP

I've been wondering about this too. I've only played a little bit of OFC, but it's only been at a poker game, where we play OFC for about 20 minutes or so before the start of the game, and we've usually just start with a 100 'unit' buy in with a 18 $5 chips and 10 $1 chips. And usually buy on with $5 chips from there.

I think an OFC set would work fine different ways:
  • limit set approach, where you have a lot of the single unit chips, and then just 1 or 2 higher denoms for rebuys or to get to 200 units to start.
  • what i'll call a board game approach, like Monopoly, where you have different denoms with a few bills/chips of each denom
  • no-limit approach, where you have few, maybe up to a barrel each, of the blinds chips, but a lot of the next denom, and few of the upper denoms

A limit set of a single unit is best. Really no need to get fancy, IMO. It requires some time to take someone’s rack. I use mixed $1 blue chips:

Unnecessarily goofy, but it’sa goofy game, and an 8 Unit is completely appropriate.

8 ones
8 threes
9 eights
4 twenty-fours

That is 200 units. 9-9-8 is 100 units.

Curious about an efficient set breakdown myself.

I generally like Inca's limit set idea per point, but I was figuring out what would made sense for a small travel set. Those look like interesting options.

I thought maybe based on the common bonuses. You pay three for getting beat on all hands, and a three bonus, so tossing two three dollar chips seems right ( I know @inca911 has never had to do this!) But payouts of one and two abound as well.
Multiples of the bonus somehow seems better if you have to have multi denoms so you could just toss one or two chips to settle each bonus as they are scored.

This is what I’ve used. It was built as a 2-4 hand NLHE set, but has been used almost exclusively for OFCP

4 is an UNlucky number in Chinese. Definitely no 4 unit denomination!

18 ones (six per player = 6 units)
30 threes (ten per player = 30 units)
24 eights (8 per player = 64 units)
15 twenties (5 per player = 100 units)

That's 200 units, and you could buy a 20/30/30/20 breakdown.

I asked because I brainstormed a custom plaque set. MSK sells 50-plaque storage. So the ones and threes are the smaller plaques for the smaller storage boxes, and the eights and twenties are larger plaques for the larger storage boxes. It could work. Chances are close to zero that I actually get artwork and do it, but in my mind such a set would be fantastic.

100% with @inca911 , it's essentially a limit game, use a limit set.

Any efficiency gained by doing a 3x or 8x chip is lost in keeping them separated, having to count them separately, and figuring out change-making.

Everybody can multiply by one, do that. Keep it simple.
