Morning All,

Thought it was high time I signed up and said hello. I've been lurking on here for a good while now admiring all the wonderful sets being put together, now time for me to learn a lot more and start building my own. I'm in the UK, so will need to work out a plan for shipping any purchases over from the USA.

Chip wise I started with a 300pc set of ceramic Scrolls, but found the $100 and $500 chips were too close in colour. I hoped it wouldn't bother me but it did every time I opened the case to set up a game. I currently use a 500pc set of ceramic EPT replicas for tourneys which I thought were perfectly fine....then I stumbled onto this website and saw the error of my ways. I'll likely keep the EPT set for larger games but I'm aiming to build my own mixed micro cash set from RHC and THC's, let the search commence!

Any ways, I'm off for a click around, expect many dumb questions from me over the coming weeks!

Cheers, Matt

Welcome chap. I got here much like you did, but learned quickly that legitimately everybody will answer even the dumbest questions happily. You're gonna enjoy it!

Welcome! Always ask first theres lots of knowledge here and members ready to help guide you! I will advise from a personal opinion mixing RHC and THC in one set can be a bit tilting for some, make sure this route is one you are committed to if you are concerned with shipping rates... wishing you the best of luck in your journey!

Microstakes FTW!

Thanks for the welcomes :)

I think I already agree with you on the mix of RHC and THC. I much prefer the look of THC faces as they have the smaller labels, but they seem to be less frequently added to the classifieds. A lot of the $1 sets typically seem to be RHC but perhaps I have not been looking hard enough just yet? The set will very likely be starting down at 0.05 and 0.25 which also seem hard to come across so relabelling may be a factor too.

Also for shipping, I have few people I know state side - one idea I've had is to get each purchase shipped to him as I piece the set together, then get it all shipped internationally which should reduce costs :)

There’s a few UK members on here and a lot across Europe as well.
If you’re having stuff shipped you’ll need to watch out for the 20% customs charge as well. If you want any advice about getting stuff over here and saving money PM me.
And anything else that you’re not sure of just ask. There’s a lot of very knowledgeable people on here.

THC can be a little more costly, but most will agree it's likely worth the price. I personally love RHC chips, but the edges can take a beating. Relabeling is a great option, and there are vendors here that can help with that. Have you decided if you are looking for solids or edgespots? And if you are in the mint or used chip market?

Good to hear there are chippers this side too :) May very well reach out to you to discuss my options on shipping when the time comes, appreciate it.

The edge wear is what partly draws me towards THC as I think I read they are tougher, but both very pretty.

I'm ideally looking at as close to mint as I can get, as I really like the look of stacks with sharp edges! I know they'll wear down as they get used at my games but should last a fair while with gentle use. Not really settled on solids or edgespots yet, I also like both hot stamps and labels! I saw a nice set here in one of pr0n sections which had a solid hotstamp frac, then edge spot labels for the other denoms - that was a nice looking set.

Is there a general feeling here on what colours chips should be? I know whites tend to be $1s, red £5s, green $25s. But as this is a micro set I may end up labelling over $25s and using the as fracs etc. I guess as long as the spot progression is nice it shouldn't matter in the set.

I can see my 1 x mixed micro set rapidly turning into many different sets just because...well...chips! :wow:

Correct

Mint chips are awesome, they dont shuffle as smoothly until they have been broken in, I prefer mint chips they look great, but when it comes to shuffling I like them more used. Love hot stamps as well, but fairly equal as far as hot stamps and labels. I have a few sets of labeled chips with hot stamp fracs, and labeled sets with solid fracs as well. Both are great options.

Theres your standard color scheme, cali color scheme, etc. You have some options. Most ones are blue or white, but can vary a tad. 5s vary the same, some red, some orange etc. Using the 25s as quarters would be fine you could implement a black white purple or yellow $20 pending your other color options. Ultimately it's up to you. I usually dont make any firm decisions until I find the chips I love most and want to use, then I look more into color and spot progression. Also, take into consideration your standard chip set is 39mm, but there are also 36mm (some people like to use those as fracs, but they're RHC) and then you have 43mm, which is your IHC chips and people will use them for your higher denoms like 20 and 100, while keeping the remainder of the cash set 39mm. Lots of options:ROFL: :ROFLMAO:

Generally speaking one set turns into multiple quickly, simply because you find your first bunch of chips and make them I to your set, soon there after you'll find some different chips and your brain will say oh these would look great here instead of those. And thus a new set starts lol
Also you may find an already complete set of something completely different and it just speaks to you, and well theres your third set haha it happens quickly, dont be alarmed.

You tend to find that’s the norm but there are different colourings like California tends to have
Yellow $5s, Black $20s and White $100s

Really appreciate the lengthy reply, plenty to consider! I'd likely keep with 39mm chips just for storage ease as my first set will likely be 300pc. I saw some nice $25's in the classifieds which may look cool relabelled as quarters.
Im also leaning towards preferring RHC chips over THCs....so best not buy anything just yet incase a change my mind again!
I saw a nice set using a red THC 5 as a nickel, then nice colour progression RHC's for quarters and up.

This is going to be an expensive hobby >_<

Keeping to one size definitely cuts down on having different racks for different size chips and when you get there, having different size cut outs in your case.

RHCs are more affordable imo, but I would be as patient as possible and do lots of window shopping before pulling the trigger. You'll feel it when its right. Once you get into it a little more you'll find relabeling can become an extensive procedure pending how in depth you get in to it

I'm not far from Glasgow, which is also @BonScot's Manor! I know Bournemouth - been there a few times (including the pier!)
A tad far for us to have a meetup game then :D B'mouth is nice, luckily we live far enough away that we don't get impacted by the waves of tourists in the summer!
