Hi all - Wanted to say Hi. New to the group and looking forward to getting my first set of chips, probably around 300 to start since I don't play that often and if so, it's always with a small group.

Am exploring

Milanos
Pokerknights / Mint and other Claysmiths
Dunes
Pharoah's (from Apache, can't afford the Paulsons lol)
Nile Club
Dia de los muertos

Or even getting a custom set from Alibaba.

Do you recommend getting a used set to start? I don't see many available

See ya all round.

Hello, and welcome!

I have sets of most of the ones you are looking for: Milano's, Dunes, Pharaoh's or Nile Clubs. I make them available to new members for a very good price (300 chips would be between $60 and $75 plus shipping depending on which chip you wanted). Or, if you would like, I can send you a set of samples of each so you can make a better decision (the samples are free if you pay shipping and return them to me or I'll make you a very good deal on the price for the Samples if you would like to purchase them -- totally up to you).

So, if you're interested let me know and we'll get started making you a great set.

Oh, also, I recommend a used set, for first time chip buyers I recommend samples and then a nice used set. But, that's just my two cents.

Again, welcome to the Forum!

The annoying law of physics surrounding the start of a chipper's journey is still: Buy samples.
I even hate saying that because it isn't what you want, right?
You want to sprint and pick-up the grail of grail sets and immediately hit the felt.

My Advice:
The Dia de Los Muertos ceramics are worth the sample purchase.
The Royals and Majestics are worth the sample purchases.
You need RHC shuffle stacks: bicycle tires and near-mint.
You need to feel a leaded Paulson shuffle stack in any condition.
You need at least one Tophat & Cane molded chip in any condition.
-
Finally, you need one set in your cross hairs.
Don't try to build multiple sets at the beginning, unless your scrooge-swimming in currency.
This way, $1, $2, $3.. $7.. $12.. $35 / chip, you know it's worth it to you, no matter the internet chatter.
Decide on that one set and go for it, otherwise before you know it you're $200 in for ceramics, $300 in for china clays, $250 in for used RHCs that you wished were mint..

Choose one set, one condition, and throw your wallet at it.
But you'll always feel like you might be missing out on something else without those initial sample chips/conditions/mold.
Pictures can't tell you that your beautiful chips are going to topple over because their impossibly slippery and can't stack.

I'll shut up now

Welcome to the forun. Used sets paulson or otherwise are a great place to start (and avoid the minty chip addiction haha) you can always buy a used set for low cost and move them on if they dont don't your tastes

@SeanGeck will have some input for you on this.

Welcome to the forum! Does your group play cash, tourneys, or both? If cash, what stakes? What’s your chip budget?
This should have said “@SeanGecko will have some input for you on this.”

Welcome, was in the same boat, with the same thoughts a month ago. If you haven't already, you can get a Sampler pack from @Apache that has all of those chips listed above. Nice way to see them all. If you take your time, and are kinda willing to "waste" ~$75 you can end up in a place where you can feel real comfortable with your decision.

This place was to me really overwhelming at the beginning, but it is loaded with helpful folks.

There have definitely been used Milano, and Dunes sets go up here. Just have to keep checking / scrolling the Classifieds.

Thanks. I might just take you up on your offer. I ended up ordering a bunch of samples just to see the difference between a few types but there are still a lot out there I want to check out. Hope they arrive soon.

I'm conflicted between just getting one set or creating a mixed set. The DDLMs are growing on me the more I look at the design though they are a bit out of my budget for now! The more I research the more my budget (or lack therefore) increases!

Hey Sean - It was actually your Reddit post on r/chipporn that got me started on getting my own set, and down the Alibbab custom chip set rabbit hole :) Still thinking of the 'perfect' design for myself :)
Feel free to message me I am currently working on multiple designs myself. Also hoping to order more in the upcoming months.

I got the DDLMs samples and I must say I really love the designs though the are a bit out of my budget but my budget seems to be increasing with each passing day and my desire to have multiple sets is growing! :D Lol - Already thinking of a custom design.

I'm waiting eagerly for a bunch of other samples to arrive - the more I research, the more I cannot decide :)

I'm not sure how big of a game I will hosting so right now I'm inclined to go with a 300 chip set to start and if go from there - nothing custom to start to retain some flexibility to add to the set. I'm thinking of $0.25 / $1.00 / $5.00 / $25.00 / $100.00. Does that make sense and what breakdown do folks recommended for those denominations?

Hello all - I'm now exploring Majestics too. Does any one have a sample set they are looking to off-load before I head over to Apache? Thanks all.
