Can someone tell me if they see a difference?

Is the difference just age and the mold they used?
Thanks

I found long cane in search but not why or where I guess, thanks for help.

Do a search for SCV and LCV. You will find a lot of info. Short story is that there are two slightly different versions of the mold at Paulson. There even exist chips that have SCV on one side and LCV on the other.

Blue is Short Cane version, Red is Long Cane version. Two different molds. Note the different angle of the cane itself and the hat edge. Short Cane is right next to the brim as compared to Long Cane that is just slightly more horizontal (SCV vs. LCV).

Is it always the case that the LCV's inlay area isn't recessed and SCV's always are recessed? Because that at least usually seems to be the case.

This is the case on hotstamped chips, and older inlaid chips, but not newer ones from my observation. For instance Paris LCV has a recess (and SCV on opposite side), though the recess may be slightly shallower than the SCV chip.

FWIW, there are differences in texture between the molds, LCV has slightly coarser cross hatching. This leads to a slightly different feel particularly in hotstamps. The lack of a recess also lends a slightly different sound to the LCV vs SCV. And the diameter of the inner ring is slightly smaller on LCV chips vs SCV leading to weird issues with 1" inlays.

Check out Robert Eisenstadt's site antiquegamblingchips.com. There is a lot of material there, particularly in the Education section of his web site.

The image below is from the Chip Guide.
The top image is Long Cane. You can see the gap between the left rim of the hat and the cane is larger on the top vs the bottom. Easiest way to tell.

Sorry ADS' post above has the link. Here is an image from that page.

Then there’s the chubby cane that goes the other way

Or the really skinny cane with flat bottomed hat

In addition to differences in cane angle, cane length, hat height, and recess depth, the SCV mold also has a narrower outer ring than the LCV chip, which results in the bottom of the hats on LCV chips to be closer to the inner circle mold mark.

So yeah, I always see at least five or six differences. And that doesn't include the differences between LCV chips produced by Burt Co. and Paulson (different materials, different colors, different spot/die shapes, and a different appearance in the hat recess (etched vs machined).

Neither of those chips are THC molds -- the top pic is a 39mm RHC PAULSON CHIPS mold, the bottom pic is a 48mm FHC 39mm RHC mold.

Missing is the 36mm AHC, 39mm card-pip, 43mm IHC mold, and 48mm FHC (all have hat/canes).

Actually the 2nd is this 39mm chip:

But now I’m all confused. I must go to chip school. :D

So is the top pic a 36mm ? Or one of tbe hat/canes from a card pip mold? Nah, those have an outer ring...

Those turning stone weirdos are a real oddity. The mold is clearly different than other LCVs, the recess cuts into the hats. A recess that isn't there on chips from that time. As you noted, modern LCV chips have a deeper recess, but this doesn't match the turning stone mold either.

here's a nice 1 to 1 LCV/SCV comparison.
