You assholes got me researching baseball cards (favorite hobby from my childhood) and I need to stop before I get addicted to that and poker chips.

P.S. - Are there any packs/boxes reasonably priced actually worth opening or do you addicts only buy singles? :ROFLMAO:

It's fun opening boxes but I wouldn't recommend it. You will rarely if ever get a "money's worth" aka the hypothetical ability to sell all the cards in the box for more money than you paid. But it's also fun to open mystery shit to see what you get which is why things like mystery box toys and stuff exist. It's all basically gambling and remember the house always wins. Also if you are interested in specific players or teams it makes sense to just go get singles instead of hoping to find what you want in a box.

There are typically two type of boxes.

1) Cheaper big boxes. These tend to cost between $75-150 and usually have a lot of cards (60-150) but only have 1-4 autographs and/or jersey cards. Base cards and inserts have become basically worthless unless they are star players and/or low numbered parallels. You are very unlikely to find anything good in these unless you hit a star rookie auto or something. For baseball, Bowman Chrome (around $120) is probably the best of these.

2) Expensive small boxes. These cost like $100-600 and come with around 5-10 cards. Some variations cost around 100-200 but only have 1 graded card inside but it's guaranteed to be something pretty cool with the chance for epics. Every card in these packs are supposed to be something good but when you miss on these you miss HARD. I've seen $400 boxes have less then $50s worth of stuff opened. On the low end for baseball something like Topps Triple Threads (also usually around $120) look really cool but have a lot of misses in the set usually. On the higher end National Treasures (around $500) miss a lot as well but when you hit in those you HIT.

Also I would recommend watching some box breaks on youtube before you buy a box to get a feel for typical pulls. I really like this guy and watch when i'm bored or want to see what some of the new expensive stuff I can only dream of buying looks like.

Last time I opened something I got killed. Bought four tins of Sweet Spot and told myself never again. Cost me like $75? each and my big hits sell for a couple bucks on eBay. I did get the Gehrig jersey out of one of them though.

Here is some of the collection of my other hobby..... Bryant’s all got sold when the 13’s came out after the 14’s. That is about 1/3 of my Harper collection mostly from 2011-2013.

Fuck Bryce harper! :ROFLMAO: Sorry, it's a natural reaction as a Braves fan, can't help it! Welcome and great collection.

Bryce harper - bringing championships back to DC since 2019.

Mookie was really my guy. Went deep on him in 2013, had 5 or 6 gold 9.5/10s with probably 15 other color autos. I’d love to see him in ATL with Acuna!

Me too. We signed will Smith today and I'm pumped about it. I think Donaldson and a starter are our top priorities followed my a decent catcher. I wish our front office wasn't a bunch of wussies, we have so many prospects that might not pan out but are worth a ton on trade value currently. Send the farm for a starter and a lindor/Mookie type player already Dammit.

Baseball card collecting is where it all started for me back in the mid-80s. Nearly all are gone now, except for my Don Mattingly collection. Poker chips are now my collection of choice.

@RainmanTrail how many cards do you have? I know nothing about the hobby and probably won't get into it, but I am curious if people collect anything and everything including bulk or just the high ticket items in small quantities

I don't have a lot now. I had 100,000+ when I was a kid, but I tossed/donated over 99% of them earlier this year after discovering it in my parents attic. Now I just have about 100 or so high-ish dollar cards and maybe 2,000 or so low-end cards of some of my favorite players.

I mostly just buy singles. But I have bought about 6 boxes of NBA cards this year, hoping to get some nice Zion Williamson & Ja Morant rookies. I mostly failed in that attempt, but I did score a nice Kobe Bryant card that's worth about $800 or so. All-in-all, I probably broke even on the boxes if I were to resell everything one-by-one, but I'm going to hold onto most of this year's rookies because this NBA rookie class is the most hyped class possibly ever. Certainly the most hyped class since Lebron's rookie year. I also pre ordered about 15-20 boxes of the flagship NBA cards (Panini Prizm Hobby & Panini Optic) that I'm not sure what I'll do with yet. The case I pre-ordered has already gone up by $1000 since I pre-ordered it and it hasn't even arrived yet lol. And Zion hasn't even played a game yet either! Crazy. I might just keep most of them in boxes/cases though and resell as unopened later. We'll see. Depends on how much I feel like gambling. But it's very much a gamble when you're buying boxes and opening them up.

Buying singles is probably the wiser investment. But you have to pick the right cards/players, otherwise you're just pissing money away. And there's no guarantee that any of this stuff will be worth anything in the future, so it's very speculative investing if you want to call it that.

Whatever you buy though, DON'T BUY FOOTBALL CARDS! That's almost a guaranteed way to piss your money down the drain lol.

My understanding is those bomb proof screw down cases are bad for the cards. You might want to get those into the top loaders instead
you might be right. these are the ones that have a spacer in them for the card so that they free-float a bit. But they've been in there forever. And unfortunately, i handled and played with the cards too much as a kid, so none of them are worth grading.

These are the ones I've had a chance to scan so far. I have a bunch of cards that I sent off for grading though and a few in the mail. I bought almost all of these over the past 2 months lol.

Are you still holding all these? You probably made what a quarter million off these cards in 2 years?

I sold a lot of them over the past few months, but I still have about half of them. I predicted that the card market was going to experience a significant bump a couple years ago, so I started buying like crazy. Then covid came and accelerated that timeline. I've sold a lot of my better cards though. Definitely did well on them. Looking to trade those cards in for a cabin at Lake Tahoe now lol. I've got more to sell! :ROFLMAO:

I'm also selling as much as I can. Not sure if I'll get to 7 figures of profit, but definitely well into the 6 figures. Cards I paid a few hundred dollars are selling for 5 figures now, pretty wild market

Is it still the Becket Price guide? If @RainmanTrail is saying he sold his for crazy sum of money I might have to consider selling. I know I have unopened boxes of Topps Stadium Club cards from the first year they were made. Numerous other unopened boxes and factory sealed sets from the mid to late 80’s through early 90’s primarily baseball but also hockey.

Keep those unopened boxes unopened.

I just started watching a YouTube channel about collecting within the past few weeks. Real interesting how that market skyrocketed this past year.
Y’all are big time throwing out these numbers :cool
I think my best card is a Topps triple thread auto 2/3 Reggie Jackson (my favorite player) or Albert Pujols TT Chrome if I got it graded. But apparently wait times to a grade service is close to a year

Wait time depends cards value. You pay more to grade higher value cards. Under $200 and it's a year. Under $1k and it's like 3-4 months. Under 2500 and it's a few weeks. Under 5k and it's a week. More than that and it's only a day to grade though transport time is more
