When I can be damn sure that anyone coming into my home (including myself) won't infect my family. In short, when there has been no new cases of transmission in my country for 2-3 weeks, everybody in the country is tested, and the border remains closed (or when everybody has proof of immunity).

In other words, not for some time yet.

Got to be very careful about who you surround yourself with until the virus really starts to clear up

I'd rather not wait, but realistically, should wait until either 1) vaccine received, or 2) immunity is achieved. Prefer #1, which confers #2 without experiencing infection!

It's a good question. There is definitely no ONE thing that I will go by. The huge problem with poker is the shared touching of the cards/chips. Just not sure of a way to mitigate that sharing risk. The first games will be very different than my last games that I hosted. I am really hoping that I will be able to host on Kentucky Derby day, September 5th.

You are going to be waiting a long time my friend....if you would've put vaccine in there it would've been attainable

This discussion doesn't HAVE to go political. I think the spirit is to try and find ideas that might be helpful.

So I am just thinking about things, but not sure how much confidence I should have in these ideas, this is just brainstorming...

1) I definitely want to get to a point where six cars parked in front of the house won't inspire anyone to call a rat-line (guess this is somewhat political, but more just an identification of the political climate in your locality.)
2) 6 max games
3) Temperature screening
4) Enough set ups to remove cards from play every hour. (Hate to say it, but maybe just go with disposable dollar store paper cards and pitch them every hour.)
5) Hand wipes on the rail, players need to touch the wipes before every deal which hopefully makes it so hands are always clean before handling cards and chips.
6) Stack wipe-downs with Clorox wipes every hour

For me, it's no sooner than when the bars are allowed to open up again, and perhaps not for a time after that. Will depend on local virus activity as well. But here's the thing - whenever I host, it's at your/our own risk. I will not ask people to wear face masks or gloves or take temperatures or anything like that. No cloroxing of chips and cards. No periodic disinfecting of tables other than "betwen games". We're either chill with playing poker and hanging out, or we're not. If you're sick, stay the fuck home. If not and you're cool with playing cards, come play cards. What that means effectively means is the decision isn't unilateral. The decision doesn't belong to the indivdual, but rather it's a communal one - because there's no game without "we", and if enough people aren't comfortable playing cards then there's no game.

Yeah, I have to agree, the bars are probably a pretty good bellwether.

The decision is ultimately up to the players, I respect that.

Here in Minnesota, the average citizen is really strong on embracing social distancing and I was just thinking of measures that might let concerned players give it a try.

That was sort of my point. A vaccine is at least a year or more away, longer before everyone has been immunized and the antibodies built up sufficiently in their bodies.

I think we’re a long way from normal.

It ain't happening anytime soon.

My view is, the world ain't going to turn on like a light switch.

A vaccine would be great, but the more I consider your excellent question, the more hosting might be behind me for the present and distant future. As much as it hurts, the reality is a bleak future for hosting games as far as I am concerned. Done

From all the options, I guess I'd choose the vaccine.

Not for quite a while.

I will be recusing myself from hosting or playing in any games until my building discharges it's last COVID patient plus two weeks to assure that I won't be able to pass the virus to someone else, whether I have immunity/antibodies or not.

Tasseography. I’m hopeful that our MinneMania meetup will still happen in late September....

I am definitely not to "listen" to any one person's "get back to normal" milestones in particular. It is just going to be a decision based on all of the input from medical experts and data of local infections in combination with an understanding of the safeguards we can put in place with our game to minimize risk of transmission. But is a way off since we live in a major city where many of the players travel frequently for business.

Probably when there's a vaccine.
Probably no time soon.
I'm just hoping that it won't be too irresponsible to drink beers and shoot fireworks with friends on the 4th of july.

More than anything I've read on here, this truly makes me sad. Your game (along with @T_Chan's) was what I looked forward to every month, and what excited my interest in playing, hosting and collecting. Depressing to realize that this aspect of poker will be dormant for some time. Online is a pale comparison. Sigh.....

On the positive side my friend, I ain't done for good. I'll restart my endeavors. I'm even upgrading the DBZ with a pair of Gorilla legs. Made a sweetheart deal with Tony.

I'm still chipping, albeit broke and bitch slapped these days (wifey really did nearly for real slap me) and I'm still in love with the hobby and the idea of being a host.

I agree with your overall sentiment of waiting a long time to get back to it, and the fact that it's a communal thing to figure out when we will play again, but I don't understand this part "I will not ask people to wear face masks or gloves or take temperatures or anything like that. No cloroxing of chips and cards. No periodic disinfecting of tables other than "betwen games". We're either chill with playing poker and hanging out, or we're not."

I guess what you were saying is that YOU wouldn't decide to taking measures in your game to minimize risk, but it would be a communal decision? Unless you are saying that you won't play again until the risk is near zero (to me that would be only when there is a vaccine), why wouldn't you try to minimize the risks? I imagine that most of us will not wait until the risk is zero to host games again. So if we play again when the risk level is a 5 out of 100 (made up numbers), why not take measures that brings the risk down to a 3?

I think what he's saying is that he doesn't want to have a home game with a bunch of guys wearing surgical masks. And I agree 100%

The simple answer is if I'm hosting a poker game, I refuse to host it scared and I don't want to host a bunch of other folks who are scared. For me, poker is fun. If I'm worried about a mask and periodic sanitizing and proper social distancing then we're all going to need microphones and the worlds biggest poker table to go along with it, not to mention an automated dealer to get the cards across said table. To the degree I'm worrying about these things, I'm not having fun or paying attention to the game and that's just not a great way to host poker - let alone just play.

For now, I maintain social distancing, stay at home, etc. I feel I have a general responsibility to the public to do so. Once restaurants/bars/movie theaters are open, however, the gig is up. Viruses will be as mobile as they were before at that point because that will mean most people are also driving to work, air travel will be increased, etc, and most poeple won't be wearing masks and gloves when they leave the house. So if I'm gathering at a bar - or a theater, or a meeting room, or a church - with no mask and gloves, then we can sure as heck sit around a poker table doing the same. But again, that's just my philosophy/choice. If at least four other players don't feel comfortable doing the same, then there's no game for me to host and we carry on until such time as N >= 5. And I have zero disrespect to anyone who doesn't feel comfortable gathering for a poker game, because until there's a vaccine/herd immunity, anyone without antibodies is at risk for an unfun ride. Once the restaurants are open, I simply choose to accept that risk because the same risk will exist pretty much anywhere I go and I refuse to live my life in fear at the virus at that point.

Part of it also has to do with my past and current health situation as well. Long story short, certain common illnesses are far more dangerous (read as: potentially life threatening) to me than others and there's no vaccine or other long term medical prophilaxis or herd immunity for it for me or anyone else. Beyond hand-washing and other such standard hygiene practices, it's not easily preventable. That means I've lived every day of my life since I was 15 years old at much greater risk of permanent impairment or death from various microbes than the general public. I can either live in fear of it, or not. I've chosen the latter, and I'm certain that decision is to some non-zero degree coloring my decisions re: poker in the age of COVID-19.

I agree 100% that nobody WANTS to. I'm not sure if I would want to host if we thought masks were necessary either. But I have definitely been thinking of any way to make my games safer including changing cards regularly and probably changing out chips too, along with other things. Since I think most people will be playing before the risk is zero, I will try and make whatever changes I think will make the game safer, and make people feel safe enough to play.

Please don't misunderstand my brainstorming as antithetical to your position.

The fact is if you can get a game going under these conditions, and I felt well enough about the chances, I would play.

I just don't get the feeling I am going to find players willing to think this way.
