Hello everyone TIA, I am trying to set up a tournament for my local group on pokerstars.

Is the limit on players 9? It seems to be the max in the options, has anyone figured out a workaround for this?

Or am I just missing something and if more than 9 people sign up it would automatically set up more than one table?

I know there are other options for online play (mavens etc) but I would like to use pokerstars.

Any suggestions or ideas would be appreciated.

There is no workaround. The software has certain parameters you're bound too when setting up... I think HE allows for 2, 6 or 9. Other games, like 2-7 Triple Draw, cap seating at 6.

I think you can have up to 2000 players in a tournament. It will create as many tables as necessary.

Your best bet is to post as many questions as you care to. How many participants do you expect? How long in hours do you want your games to run? Do you plan to spread more than just NLHE? It's difficult to dispense advice when we don't know what you're trying to achieve.

The table size (number of players per table) is fixed by the software in most cases, determined by your game selection. Pokerstars allows from 2 to 2000 players per event, and will open new tables (and automatically seat and move players) as necessary as additional players register.

don't mind if I jump in
so if you have 14 members and all want to play(NLHE) will they automatically make 2 tables of 7?

Thanks for your response, I am just trying to set up a game for around 20 people and didn't know if the 9 person limit was per table or tournament.

You have answered my questions and I should be able to proceed with the additional research I have already done on the forum about the length of tournaments on pokerstars, the information I found said a 10k stack with 10 minute blinds should last aprox 2-2.5 hours depending on player count of course (since you can't change the blind structure) if I remember correctly.

I typically set my games up for 3 hours in a normal home setting, always NLHE for my games.

Sorta, but maybe not initially, unless all 14 players were preregistered. If 8 or fewer players are preregistered, the software will fill the first table until it hits 8 players, at which point the ninth player joining gets added to a new table. Any additional joining players are automatically added to Table 2, and one player from Table 1 will move to Table 2 after each hand (so no mass table-balancing occurs). After the end of the 10-minute late registration period, the seating is fixed (unless there are nine players total, in which case all will be moved to a single "Final" table.

thank you!!

No usually full table and remaining number of players at second table (I think)

NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is why you tagged people with experience in this! Quit dispensing bad advice! Quit while you're ahead Brie!

J/K of course.

The software balances the tables automatically.

A NLHE event for 20 players with 10K stacks and 10-minute blinds will run at least 3 hours, and probably closer to 3.5 hours.

would that put more pressure on the 5 person table for blinds?
Hasnt felt that way when I've played in the scenario before, but tbh it moves much quicker than what I'm used to anyway so I almost forget to watch the blinds. Plus the ante always messed me up

Automatically, but not immediately. It moves one player per hand until they are balanced.

Nobody likes a pedant, @WedgeRock :)
Just setting expectations, bro. Also explains Brie's misconception of what actually happens.

In real life play, when a table goes from 8 players to 9 nine players, the table is immediately balanced by splitting it into two tables of 5 and 4 players. But on pokerstars, that ninth player goes to Table 2 all by himself, and one player is moved *per hand* from table 1 until the two tables are balanced. Depending on the pace of play, it can take several minutes for them to actually get balanced.

We've had single table games run 3 hrs with the 10k/10min setup. 20 players - unless your game is populated primarily with a group of Super LAGs it'll run quite a while.

What would you suggest for a 3 hour game with 15, and a 3 hour game with 20 ?

^^ This. Given the constraints of the software parameters, that's the best you can do.

Hey everyone, thanks again for all the help. Did the tournament yesterday, ended up with only 10 so we did 10k chips 10 minute blinds.
Ended up lasting 2 hours 45 minutes. We also used go to meeting which was nice, got to see some of my regular players and had the normal banter we usually have at our games. Hopefully next time more of my normal players decide to join.
