Trying to find out the best way to determine when a tourney will end for our PokerStars Home Game. It's 8 game mix and the structure is very flat.

There should be about 30 players. Stars structure is sooo flat, I feel it should be a T1500 with 5 min levels in order to be done in about 3-4 hrs. Does it sound like good reasoning that this will end with 40NL bb on the table? T1500 x 30 players = 45000. This divided by 40 = 1125.

Therefore level 40-41 is when this should end.

40 levels x 5 min = 200 min. 3.33 hrs plus breaks.

This sound right?

Thanks,

The P* 8-game mix stucture is horrible. It's so fucked up that we don't even spread it as a PCF club option any longer.

There is no way to balance the game play across the different game variants, and the entire structure is organized in a very stupid fashion. Within the available parameters, it will always run longer than you think -- sometimes a LOT longer.

Thanks for the response. I really appreciate it. Is it the same with HORSE, or is that much better?

C'mon man it's not that bad. We run it around once a week.

It's a nice change of pace and while the structure leaves something to be desired, it's workable - just know what you're getting into.

Few tips/things to remember:
  • Because it includes 2-7 TD, tables are 6-max. So if you wind up with 7 or 8, you're going to be running 2 short handed tables for a while.
  • Because of the structure, there will likely not be any eliminations for the first 2 hrs even with 5 minute levels.
  • We usually have about 10 people in the game, and with 5 minute levels it's never done in less than 3 hrs. We tried one the other day with 3 min levels and it went at least 2 hrs (I busted out first and didn't stick around to see how long it lasted).
  • Sometimes you'll wind up with abrupt bust outs in the big-bet games, since those are the only games a player can go broke on in any given hand. That moves things along a little bit. But those games only comprise 25% of the rotation. The rest of the time it's a grind.
  • To answer your question, no it's nothing like HORSE. The HORSE structure increases uniformly at a pace that will complete the tournament in less than 2 hrs if you use 5 min levels and 10k stacks... and more like 2.5 hrs if you use 20k stacks. We've never done 10 min levels because 10 minutes of Razz sounds like Hell.

HORSE runs much smoother, and is more predictable (and enjoyable). As Mike mentioned above, 10K/5-min runs around 2 hrs for a full table (8 players), as does 20K/3-min. I don't advise using 20K stacks with more than a single table, unless your target time is 3 hours or more.

We tried four different versions of 8-game mix, and every one of them was a disaster and generated massive complaints. I was threatened with impeachment from my TD position if I ran a fifth one. :D Yeah, it's that bad.

I feel this could happen to me too. lol People end up thinking Pokerstars lets you have control over the blind structure but you're really at their mercy.
Might strive for sepate HORSE a NL/PLO and a 2-7td tourneys.

We've had success running two tournaments simultaneously -- HORSE and PLHE/PLO, or Badugi and NLHE. One entry fee covers both events, with 1/3 of collected moniey going to the prize pool of each event, while the last 1/3 is awarded to the top overall performers for both events combined. It has seemed to be pretty popular.

We just use the lowest sum of combined finishes to determine the best overall performers (with best finish as a tiebreaker in case of ties).
