Hey everybody!

Been pretty seriously into poker for almost a year now but still just have dice chips.

Looking to get something a little more pretty and fun to shuffle so I've been considering the Monte Carlos (don't really wanna pay an arm and a leg).

Any recommendations? I'm happy to join the community :)

Hello and welcome. Most members will tell you stay away from cheap plastics like Monte Carlos. What is yours budget? How many players? Cash or tourney set?

Thanks for the reply! I am mostly looking for a cash set for anywhere between 6-8 players. I read a thread on here which said if u are doing cash with 6-8 players you might as well get enough chips for 10 players. Budget is somewhere between 200-300 dollars

Welcome hulk bettor
Thank you legend :)

Welcome!

I was in your very shoes when I came here over a year ago.

It's boring to repeat this, but like a skipping record I must say, and once you answer very good questions raised by @Phish1321 , get samples.

Samples Samples Samples. You'll save time, money and grief if you identify what you want first, then decide if you can afford it. With samples, you won't break the bank and you can buy and sell them right here on PCF in the Classifieds section.

I had a major sampling from a great friend and fellow poker enthusiast, and it was the best thing I ever did.

Above all, have fun, and chip to your heart's content. It's so easy to achieve both of these here! You'll find great people with even better advice.

For a cash set, it's less about the number of players and more about the total bank you need to cover all the buyins at your table for the night, as well as your blinds. You need different breakdowns of chips if you have a $0.25/0.50 game vs. a $2/5 game.

At that budget, my suggestion would be to wait and save more. You might be able to get a set of Milanos in that price range, but everybody likes Milanos until they handle something else. If you have been able to save up 200-300 in about a year, I would suck it up for one more year. The 400-600 range opens up all kinds of options in the ceramics market (to include custom jobs) and getting your chips right the first time will save you TONS of money in the long run. I was in the same boat about a year a half ago - I waited and saved a little more and got my set made at brpropoker https://www.pokerchipforum.com/threads/gene-kristil-micro-stakes-magic.53333/#post-1014678 and I am happier with these than anything you will find in your current budget.

You sir have a beautiful set. I was recently offered a set of 720 milanos for $160+shipping and am considering it because I like the denominations, but I have heard advice from a couple people now saying to wait.

Welcome to the forum.

If you can stretch to $400, with patience you can assemble a 400 chip mixed casino Paulson set. Optionally, upon rare occasion a set may sell for that price. The For Sale forum section has chips that sell around $1 or less with some regularity - $1 to $100 denominations. The .25 or .50 chips will be most difficult to source, so you'd either have to relabel other denominations or use non-denominated chips for those. Including labels, you could still average $1 chip, if you work at it.

Suggested cash break-out to support up to 10 players at .25/.50 NLHE

.25 - 200 chips
1.00 - 100 chips
5.00 - 60 chips
20.00 or 25.00 - 20 chips
100.00 - 20 chips

Good luck!

Thanks for the response! I've heard that if you're handy and you care about it, relabelling and customization isn't really that big of a deal. That being said, I'm more interested in a set of chips which already looks pretty haha there's plenty of designs which I already really like just looking around.

Welcome!

I agree that saving up for a premium set is a great idea. However, if all your group has ever handled has been dice chips, then Milanos are going to feel high end. You could get those for a quick upgrade, then spend some time trying considering, ceramics, CPC's, Paulsons, etc. Additionaly, getting the Milanos at around 25¢ a chip means you won't suffer the resale loss like you would if you bought them new. Maybe even pass them along to someone else in your group at a bargain. I'm not trying to sway you in one direction or the other, just offering another point of view. I've got a china clay set, and I like them a lot. My tourney chips are inexpensive slugged plastic chips, which are fine (some are better than others, and the Monte Carlos from Apache seem to be among the best), and I don't really mind since I only host a few tourneys a year. But I'm also putting together a set of Paulsons piece by piece.

Have fun with the search!

Thanks! They ended up selling before I grabbed them :/ But I think I am going to try and build my set from the ground up with top quality chips so that I don't have to keep buying over and over again haha.

Welcome! Theres several affordable china clay and ceramic options for a cash game, if you can snag some samples or work out a sample loner that would be a great start!
