So I have a rack of Paulson starbursts that I picked up on a kijiji/ Craigslist score. Now I'm not 100% how to describe them as they are a yellow chip. That being said, how does someone determine which yellow variation they are without other yellow chips for a side by side comparison?

It's very difficult. You can try using the Paulson colour reference photos in the Resources section here to see if you can guestimate it. But you really need a sample set in your hand to compare to know for sure. And the chips need to be clean.

There are only three yellow color variations in the Paulson chip lineup: Canary Yellow, Yellow, and Daisy.

Daisy is a lighter hue than the other two, while Canary is brighter and more saturated than Yellow (but not by much; they are pretty close and hard to tell apart unless directly compared to each other).

There is a Paulson color chart in the PCF References section which may help.

RIP Mustard

If you have any other Paulson chips with any sort of yellow spot, take pics together, can include other paulson chips for reference, and someone here can take an educated guess. There are also colors of Mustard, and Arc Yellow (which is a yellow/orange color), and an Almond, which is a very light/pastel yellow.

BGinGA beat me to it, but there's a Paulson Chip Color Reference (photo library) at the bottom of Page 3 of Resources here:

Yeah, I do consider both Mustard and Almond to be members of the 'dirty white' family, which also includes Beige, Off-White, and Gray.

But imo, Arc Yellow falls solidly in the 'orange' category.

You can't.

BGinGA mentioned the three official Paulson shades of yellow, but even within those categories there are pretty wide variations in tone. I've lost count of the number of chips I've seen that aren't really the same color as any of the color-sample chips. Age & environment can do a lot to a chip's color.

Colon Orange == brown/beige

and wtf is "colon orange" anyway.
I've often wondered the same thing.

I was gonna ask my doctor, but didn't want him to stick a scope up my ass for color confirmation...

you can always send me a sample chip, but if they are old , used chips, it will be harder to determine

Agree!

Indian Blue == basically a green
Sea Green == basically a blue
Colon Orange == brown/beige

and wtf is "colon orange" anyway. Someone's name?

I had a History teacher in high school who was a new Father. He used to refer to the highlight colour in our textbooks as "baby shit gold". maybe he transitioned into gaming supplies.

Not sure if the cell phone/lighting really catches any color difference in this picture, but it might help an opinion on what I have.

Its either yellow or canary. Best thing you can do is put the chip up against a common reference point of something very common and universal like the yellow on a McDonalds french fry container or something similarly universal so that someone else who has a color set can compare against from afar.

There's a better chance it is plain Yellow. Yes, they can come in any colour, but I believe the most popular colours for Starbursts were their most simple designations, i.e. Red, Black, Dark Green, White, etc. That's why better chance for Yellow (vs. Canary or Daisy).

Okay, that's the kind of information I was sort of looking for. I am very certain it wasn't Daisy, but was not really sure between Canary or straight up Yellow. If the Starbursts were typically the simple color, I most likely have yellow then. Thank you.
