They're abrasive. that word sends a chill down my spine, when we're talking about expensive clays. I know they're not exactly sand paper, but still abrasive is inherently damaging, isn't it? I dunno. I use magic erasers on chips only when needed, after other methods fail.
I bring this up because I read more and more people saying that magic erasers are part of their routine cleaning methods. Am I being paranoid here, or are the rest of you guys needlessly grinding down your clays, when a sponge might do the trick?

You’re overthinking it. They ARE magic and they make life soo much easier when cleaning these chips. In my experience, regular sponges just don’t do shit.
+1 and even using them on mint chips I can’t tell the difference between before and after. These on the other hand...

I also shared your feelings and I had the same paranoia when I brought home my first pack of these. Got the dawn dish soap and magic eraser. Didn't take long for me to stop worrying.

I do triage the dirty chips with an order of things...

First i soak the chips in Lukewarm soapy water (dawn), then I scrub with a toothbrush, and this works pretty good. If stubborn stuff still won't come off, I wipe clean and then take the magic eraser to them. Once I'm satisfied, I quickly rinse in clean lukewarm water and then dry. Very simple process.

Once you start using it, you will LOVE them. I also felt with a nice bath in some lukewarm water after makes me feel at ease.

Never got the whole “Magic Eraser” thing. Didn’t do it for me. When washing chips by hand in the past, always used the warm water/Dawn dish soap w toothbrush. For stubborn stains used Sterling’s Magic.

This is pretty much what I do. Except the toothbrush. You people who use toothbrushes are out of your minds.

Maybe part of the intent was missed. The magic eraser is soaked and used like a sponge. If it is dry then yes they are very abrasive, also the face of the chip is equally abrasive. If you use a dry magic eraser on chips it wont last very long. Water and soap while yes having cleaning properties are also a lubricant that cuts down on the abrasion of the sponge. I have never scratched a single chip, packed on years of hooker juice doesn't come off easily!!

I am always amazed when I receive chips in the condition I do... like do people display giant chunks of brown hooker juice in their display cabinets? I understand casino used racks of chips for $1 each but man when you are talking about $10 plus chips I can't believe no one ever takes the time to clean and oil so any chips! Bring them back to life so they will be around for the next generation!!

We have sold a few racks of chips at cost and it has come up in conversation... if you spend 3 to 4 hours cleaning a nasty rack and sell it at cost you definitely lost money!!! No I brought that rack back to life, the chips deserve it!!! Fellow chipper Ben

Apparently singles collectors prefer their chips unwashed. I do not understand. I'm not a germaphobe or anything, but sticky nasty chips are like half a notch below medical waste, in my mind.

Don’t get it at all. It’s like being a car collector and enjoying rust and grime all over the car

Ultrasonic cleaners aren't foolproof. Neither is simple elbow grease with a dish brush.

Sometimes chips have been stored In pretty bad conditions such that there is not merely a layer of grime on the chip, but actual chemical reaction with the chip surface that causes discolouration. Sometimes there is tenacious colour transfer, and not all the time and detergent in the world will help get that off. Someone could have used freakin' FELT MARKER or PAINT on the chips.

What you need in those cases is a (generic) Magic Eraser, because you need to remove that discoloured layer completely. A little bit of water to moisten. Then scrub until the results are satisfactory. Might take a little work, might take a lot. A lot gentler than sandpaper because you probably won't take out your molds or wear down your recesses even further.

Yup, I've seen some chips, usually older ones, that just wont't come clean under normal methods. When you get to that point, you need to start escalating. I'll admit to having used an exacto, when all else failed.

Nice results man. Just curious why you didnt have good results with the magic eraser you think. The stuff will clean the nastiness of shit typically from most surfaces. Honestly I use the stuff everywhere and it always produces the best results.

Idk? Added some water so it wasn’t dry. Confined on and the damn thing went on to fall apart. Guess I’m too heavy handed? Lol!!

Good stuff. I dump the dirty chips in the bath water with Mr. Bubbles. I move my arms around and wiggle my toes aggressively to agitate the water. When I am done bathing myself, I will apply the washcloth to any stubborn stains. This method has worked pretty well for me.

Just been busy last few days going through some of my singles and getting adventurous with some old ones that have alot of "stuff" on them.

I wanted to share the results of Magic Eraser on my dirtiest chip. I also had a Sundance $1 that was also disgusting, had what looked like pancakes boogers on it, but cleaned up like new....wish I'd taken the pre shot

Literally this. I actually got into an arguement with an eBay seller for selling me horrible chips. And that was her exact claim, that collectors desire their "original condition" and cleaning them decreases the value... I'm like..

This high def fingertip finger nail pic really does it for me

I had about 10 from different places that needed attention. I did learn to be more careful around the hot stamp area as the eraser will erase it away. I did a bit of damage to my little Caesars. But it was the first one I kind of damaged. The other dirty ones like a few of the Harrah's, they look like new! Wish I'd taken a shot of this one too...before scrubbing it . It's still not perfect, but it was unrecognizable before...

Oh some people are just gross. Like you get a chip that's brown and when you clean it it's actually yellow. And you're like, excuse me, did you blow your nose and wipe your butt with this and forget it was in your hand?
