Hello all, I host a weekly cash game and we just use some plastic chips as of right now. We use 1000 of the same chips and just use them all as .25 cents, and then the extra money on the table is just used as cash, so it’s very annoying concept. But, i’m in the process of building a definite cash set, i started out with some sam’s town 1s. I’m looking for an ideal breakdown for 6-10 players, min buyin 20 and max buyin 100. We just play .25/.50 and i like to maybe one day up the stakes it to .50/1.00. So i’m looking for .25, .50, 1$, 5$, and 20$ or 25$ chips. What would be a could ideal number of chips to have in this set?

The general standard is:

(100-120) - 25c
200 - $1
200 - $5
Round out up to 600 chips with $20 or $25 and some $100.

Good "cover all the bases" breakdown.

200 x .25
200 x 1.00
300 x 5.00
100 x 25.00
Would be a start depending on stakes. After that add racks of 5's and 25's as needed. If you're on a budget and need a bigger bank then 2 racks of 5's instead of 3 and add a rack of 25's. That's a bank of $6250. The original breakdown I posted is $4250.

It depends on your game, of course, but I’d say a rack of quarters should be plenty for a single table game. My group plays smaller stakes (5¢/10¢), and the nickels are almost never used after the flop. Someone may raise to 40¢ or 60¢, but after that, bets are made in quarters and dollars. I imagine your game will be similar, with bets after the flop being in whole dollars.

Of course, having a barrel of quarters per player won’t hurt anything, and may result in less change being made.

Also, you could get non-denominated chips for your fracs, and use them as quarters or half dollars depending on your stakes.

200 x .25
200 x 1.00
300 x 5.00

I put two racks of .25's cause I thought it might be a good compromise with your group who seems to love big stacks. I know how hard it can be to get people to break out of (useless, pointless, silly) habits.

It does also depend on what you are doing. For example, I run dealers choice that mixes limit and PL/NL. So I actually have 200 - 25c and 300 - $1 to make playing .50/$1 and .75/$1.50 limit work. But I don't run it so often that I want maybe 1 more rack of each. I feel like what I have is the bare minimum to make it work well.

I’m in the minority, but I think huge stacks are fun and intimidating, so I think your game with all .25 chips sounds fun as hell.
I agree to a point - more chips equals psychologically big pots! For our .25/.50 games with $20 or $40 buy-in, we start with the following stack:

Barrel of .25s (20 chips = $5)
1/2 Barrel of $1s (10 chips = $10)
One $5 (1 chip = $5)
For $40 buy-in add one $20 (1 chip = $20)

So 31 or 32 chips to start, nice.

$20 or $40 rebuys are often one $20 or a mix of one $20 and four $5s

I suggest the following comfortable minimum of 600, aught to do it plus 5 denominations is more colorful:

200 x .25
200 x 1
140 x 5
40 x 20 (or 25)
20 x 100

Just a note...

I'm working on a second set that will be for the same purpose, but with a minimum number of chips (since it's my first Paulson set). Could always add-on, but I'm starting with these 400 - should still work fine:

200 x .25
100 x 1
60 x 5
20 x 25
20 x 100

Thank you everyone for the input. I’m definitely leaning towards buying 200 .25 because some of the players rarely raise and love having loads of .25 chips. It does really all depend on how my guys play and i’ve been trying to keep track of it for the past couple of weeks, some players play super tight and limp a lot and others are out raising a lot. But i’m hoping getting actually denom chips will induce more raises and more aggressive playing.

I think imma go something like
200- .25
200 or 300 1s
200- 5s
and then a couple barrels of 20s

Sounds like this will work perfectly for your game.

I would recommend 200 quarters as well. I find everyone starting with 20 blind chips makes live very easy. My standard stacks for my .25/.50 game is 20 quarters, 35 dollars, and 2 $5.

I’d never recommend a second rack of quarters, but since your group loves them, and since you haven’t listed a limited budget, go for it.
as for as $1’s go - whether you’re playing .25/.50 or .50/$1, I’m telling you the third rack of $1’s aren’t necessary and won’t get used unless you force it.
but again, if your budget is unlimited, why would I argue?

57 chips per person to start. Love it - some nice splash pots with that.

Here's a picture of my group's buy-in stack options ($20 or $40, 31 or 32 chips) with Dunes CC chips - it' nice to get the $20's in play:

One could argue that since you're already playing .25/.50 that the most optimal solution would be to change to .50/.50 and only get .50 chips as fracs. Of course, that removes the flexibility to go to .25/.25 should you wish but since you're thinking about going to .50/$1, is this likely?

Personally, I would get 200 quarters, not because I need that much but because I hate incomplete racks for the lower denoms and I can spread 2 tables if I need to. Really you only need a max of 120 quarters for a single table and 100 works just fine.

So I am going to trim your list here. Really you only need 0.25, 1, and 5 here. The 0.50 chip is superfluous unless you take Darson's suggestion below.

Darson even asked the right question are you more likely to downstake or to upstake?

Now for .25-.50 or .50-.50 I treat the one as the workhorse and that's the one you should load up on. I think 2-3 barrels per player is the right approach here. Now in .50-1, more bigger bets are made and singles really only get use on the early streets, so the five is the workhorse chip here.

So if we're talking 1000 chip set I would do

100*0.25
400*1
400*5
80*25
20*100

If we're talking 600 chip set, it will be tighter

80*0.25
220*1
220*5
60*25
20*100

If you decide to use 0.50 chips instead of 0.25 then you can get away with only 60 of these and free up more of your set.

Based on my experience the $100 chips will probably not see any felt, especially for these stakes. At our fairly active 1/2 game, we’ve yet to exhaust a rack of $25s.

$1 x 200
$5 x 600
$25 x 160
$100 x 40

NL50 (.25 - .5)
120 x 0.25
200 x 1
200 x 5
80 x 25

NL100 (1 - 1)

Keep the above breakdown (just drop the 0.25). It can cover 10 players (3 full buyin per player). If you need more buyin per players, add a couple barrels of $25.
You then don't need to buy the 50c.

NL100 (.5 - 1)
60 x .50
200 x 1
200 x 5
140 x 25

Wow! I think I’m in the minority with chip stacks. The more small chips the worst in my opinion. Just my opinion but this breakdown has worked well for my .25-.50 where starting stacks $50:

8 X .25
13 X 1.00
7 X 5.00

For Rebuys and Add Ons I use all of the 5s (120 total) until they are gone and then break out the 25s

my set:

80 X .25
100 X 1.00
120 X 5.00
100 x 25.00
100 x 100.00 (obviously one does not need 100 100 chips but that’s what I had to buy)

I have had this set for 5 years and have never had an issue with 8 handed .25-.50, .50-1.00, or 1.00-2.00

I think you have to take into effect the way the game plays as well to determine what kind of chips you need. I have 2 games, one game is usually a smaller buy in and the players usually dont bet as much. In the other game, the buy in is higher and the game can get big quick.

I have a 1000 piece set:

200-.25
200-.50
200- $1
150-$2
150-$5
50- $10
50-$25

Have a range of denominations and always seems to work out for whatever game I am hosting.

Our .25 / .50 with initial 100BB goes:

4 x .25
6 x .50
11 x 1.00
7 x 5.00

We always run out of $5 as only have 50, then it's cash on the table ... trying to resolve that by being here to investigate what, and apparently how many to purchase.

I love these types of questions and it’s cool seeing everyone’s breakdowns at their home games.

I will suggest buying a set that has a breakdown that allows to to expand to .50-1.00 or 1.00-2.00. You never know when your friends want to get frisky:)

You can then just go for a set that you use for NL100 (1-1) and NL200 (1-2) and don't bother with 50c.

What kind of breakdown are you using?

I've 2 cash sets.

One 6-max (NL only) and one 8-max (that I can also use for limit).

6-max
10c x 60
50c x 60
$1 x 120
$5 x 80
$25 x 20

It can cover NL10 (10c-10c), NL20 (10c-20c) and NL50 (.5 - .5). --> https://www.pokerchipforum.com/threads/the-post-silver-star-6-max-cash-set.54339/#post-1039260

8-max
10c x 120
50c x 80
€1 x 120
€5 x 120
€20 x 40

It can cover the same games NL10 (10c-10c), NL20 (10c-20c) and NL50 (.5 - .5) but is also usable for limit games (limit 20c-50c and 50c-€1). --> https://www.pokerchipforum.com/threads/the-bank-sunfly-polyclay.53844/
