What Books have helped your game? (1 Viewer)

The books that helped me most:

SNG Book of Colin Moshman
Poker Mindset
and both SNG Books of Phil Shaw

At the moment I am reading J. Little's Cash Game Book and it will improve my game.

Regarding the TV Shows, I liked (and still like) a lot to watch Poker After Dark.

Unlike other shows like WSOP, WPT, ... you see each and every hand and you can follow the dynamics of the table. Don't get me wrong, WSOP, ... are really fun to watch but might not be useful to improve your skills.

Gus Hansen Every Hand Reveled but you have to read it watching Aussie Millions 2007, I was sceptical but this book helped my game a lot,
Everything Jeff Hwang wrote on PLO... you can't overestimated these books

Brushing up on Hwang before playing some PLO next week. Found a good use for the @BonScot cut card while I await the arrival of the Coronavirus Scrub Donkey set.

I think psychology and physical tells are post-graduate stuff. First master the basics.

An essential book (volumes I & II) is Harrington on Cash Games, about NLHE cash. Nice starting base. It should suffice by itself for most social / recreational home games, or soft casino tables till today.
The fact that many (if not most) poker-interested people have read it, doesn't make it "outdated". You know the alphabet or you don't.
You can then move to reading more focused and advanced stuff, or revert to Uncle Doyle's old-fashioned Super System, which I sense you can appreciate more, and make most of it, after you 've read Harrington's more systematic book. Super System (II) contains chapters about other forms of poker too, like stud.

For Omaha, the best book by far should be Jeff Hwang's "Pot-Limit Omaha Poker - the big play strategy".
It saved me tons of money by authoritatively convincing me to NOT play that game.

Great points. My buddies and I just got back into having a weekly (and friendly) cash game to blow off some steam and haven't really played all too much since high school. Sounds like interesting reading and I'll be picking up a copy! Always loved watching Harrington when I was watching poker on tv back in the day

I even relayed a summary of some of the book's teachings to some of my regulars who are too busy with family and the like to be able to read about poker; my aim has always been to have a nice level of noble competition and not to crush the game and systematically take my friends' money (that would have killed the game, by the way).
Of course, what you read just can't be really assimilated, unless you also play in the meantime.

I agree on tells as a postgraduate materials.
But with a great respect to Harrington's book, no bad can happen from reading them just remember they are old news. Many new strategies been developed.

Zach Elwoods trilogy paid for itself it one night. I highly recommend them.

What Went Wrong?: Case Histories of Process Plant Disasters and How They Could Have Been Avoided - Trevor Kletz

Itll still put you ahead of most rec players. Just depends on the games you are playing.

If anyone has some books they are no longer using, I'm looking to update my library and would be interested in purchasing (or happily accept freebies :D ). I just got rid of about 20 some books in the last 6 months that I had from early to mid 2000s. I still have 8 that I held onto but I'd like to get some updated material since I have some extra time at home for the foreseeable future...

I'm interested in anything Ed Miller and the SCOOP! book but open to others around NLHE and PLO.

Right now I'm reading Ed Miller's Playing the Player...great read so far.

Thanks!
Brian

Ive read all these books and currently rereading Carson’s book (select chapters). All of these books have helped me to make a sizable contribution to the PCF Community.

I was going to post exactly this. I bought both volumes used last year and have read both cover to cover at least twice. Great baseline.
