So this is not a typical poker player question. I recently received a military commanders coin from a service member at Eglin Afb. However, it was not a coin it was a poker chip. I did some research and found that it was a ceramic poker chip from chiplab.com I was looking at ordering some of these myself but I am not well educated on the difference between ceramic and clay. Will the ceramic be more durable if always kept in a pocket like a coin? My concern with clay is the durability. I would prefer clay but want whatever will last longer and be more durable to small abuse. Any suggestions? I have posted a pic of the one i found online that the commander gave me

Metal chips or are you refering to metal coins? Chips are cheaper because its easy to just print on them. Metal coilns need a mold made and are expensive. Are there metal chips?

Well, I guess technically it's a card guard, but can be customized and they are even a vendor here on PCF! I have not made one yet, but I want to if I could ever decide on a design. Take a look:

Not sure if the size works for you, but I'm sure it would be cool!

This seems it would be close to 24 grams which is obviously a bit heavy compared to poker chips. Something to consider I guess. I'm curious to see the other options.

man i cant believe its been 4 years since that post. it was an interesting feeling getting coined by my commander with the coin that i designed.

but yes metal would be more expensive and usually requires a minimum order to create the mold/stamp/die. custom ceramics also usually require a minimum order but are far less expensive and you get a bigger "canvas" for designs.

@H|Q did a custom metal card protector that was pretty cool. Perhaps he can post about the details here about minimums and pricing...

Looks like you were supposed to sell me one!

Ceramic will hold up better in your pocket then the clay. The clay would most likely chip, and eventually snap in half..Ceramic would be the cheaper option..

Good luck,
OldWestPokerSupplies can help and they do great work. He is a vendor here on this site.

Ill take a look. Im assuming 12 gram is a good weight fro poker chips as well?

Real poker chips (casinos and cardrooms) are 9 or 10 grams - true for clays and ceramics. Cheap plastic chips trying to seem higher-quality are slugged with metal to make them 12 or 14 gram, because people associate weight with quality.

A real clay chip lets you choose clay colors, but the printed part in the center is limited to the "inlay," and they will cost you more - more per piece, and a higher minimum. Ceramics can be printed on the entire chip face and on the rolling edge, will cost under $1 each, and will have lower minimum order amounts.

Ceramics will hold up fine in a pocket. (It's not really made of ceramic - it's a polymer which is less fragile than, say, bone china plates.)

But as to what's the best poker chip? You realize where you came, right? It's like walking into a crowded sports bar in a major city and asking, "what's the best team?"
