Ultrasonic Chip Cleaning (7 Viewers)

Just started cleaning the Horseshore chips I received. The process is awesome going with Ultrasonic ..Oiling is painful still but I am concerned about fading... my water is always a nice maroon from those Horseshoe 5's .I can only wonder if temp was lower would this change. Once oiled they look ok but I can tell they have lost a tad of there original color. Not sure what the best way to address this is or overtime will we see the color come back after oil kicks in...

I noticed the same thing. I decided to keep them in the cleaner for one minute per 50 chips. Kept the temp between 95 103 for the most part.

how long did you run the batch in the cleaner

For me. The whites were disgusting. I ran them for 2 minutes per 40 and kept the heat between 100 and 107. Everything else was 1 to 1.5 minutes per 50.

Usually the THC need longer than RHC. Makes sense $1 need longer. iirc 30 seconds is typically s good number for RHC.

I'm in the 41 - 43 temp with no fading issues, still early stages for me. But maybe your concentration of TSP is too high ??

Yea im going to have cooler water and cut time to 30 seconds and check results - more input to follow ( also note maroon seems to always be a color that fades easier than others) never saw this with green or yellow or blue for that matter ,all THC

A couple of guys have asked me about the ultra sonic cleaning method for cleaning my Horse Shoe Chips. This is the way I did it. I'm sure there are 27 different ways to clean chips. First and foremost I have to give 97% of the credit to @ChaosRock . Its his cleaner. He gave me very solid step by step directions.

Here is everything I used. I used two table spoons of TSP per batch.

This is how they turned out.

Step 1: I heat the water in the microwave for about 1.25 minutes.

Step 2: I pre mix the TSP in the water, then add to the ultra sonic cleaner. Turn on , set temp for 103 turn on the ultra sonic part to speed up the heating process if necessary).

Step 3: Put 40-50 chips in the basket, lock the lid using two rubber bands.

Step 4: If the ultra sonic cleaner isn't on, turn it on. Insert the basket into the USC. Continuously rotate while inserted in the USC. Every 30 to 45 seconds remove the basket and lightly shake the chips. Insert back into the USC and continue rotating.

Step 5:After "x" amount of time. Remove the chips from the basket and place into a bowl of water. I then ruffled the chips in the water ensuring that the TSP was rinsed off of the chips.

Step 6: Place on towel, pat dry, and let sit over night.

Step 7. Oil

Step 8: Fondle

For the whites I had them in the USC for two minutes. They were the dirtiest of the bunch. Two minutes in the USC cleaned the edges and the faces of the chips as seen in the pictures.

For the other chips they were in the UCS for 1-1.5 minutes.

The temp of the USC ranged between 97 and 107.

Any questions ask Paulo :)

I follow the same process explain in the original post. Here is what I did this weekend for couple hundred chips

Got some chips from Spinetti's this week that needed cleaning and figured I would test run the ultrasonic method out before the 1400 horseshoe chips arrive on Tuesday. After the test run I'm sold, so easy to clean compared to by hand...I did the sample horseshoe set by hand and hated it vs. the 86 chips I did in the ultrasonic. Took the same amount of time and the results are great. I did run into one hiccup along the way though as apparently I'm no drilling god like @courage as the minute I tried to drill one hole in the outer plastic it cracked. I even had the same drill/bit. I'm guessing they changed their plastic compound to something cheap as I tried a few different ways, and couldn't do it without so I just gave up and filed it down. I now have a very functional drain hole to rinse the chips with....all planned...

I was talking with @inca911 about cleaning methods this weekend at SSSS since we have the same equipment. I've wondered if my use of the external clear bowl impedes some of the effectiveness of the ultrasonic even with drilled holes. He uses the same salad spinner but without the clear bowl. The lid fits fine of course to the green cage, then submerging that into the tank pinches it and holds it closed. Just rotate it by hand. Not as sexy but perhaps more effective. I'll try this also some time to see how it works.

That's a long-winded way of saying perhaps it's not a problem. (y)

I hole saw bit would probably work better than a spade bit. A drill with a trigger speed control will help as well.

Are those all with the rotating salad spinner method? I just put mine in the basket and shake them around a bit, and was not getting the results I was hoping for...

I held the basket and continuously rotated it. Every 30 seconds would give it a quick shake. Worked great

Tyler,
Courage and I both use the rotating salad spinner. My earlier posts in this thread detail the method. 2mins on the horseshoes was plenty, turning by hand. I don't use the clear plastic bowl, just the green spinner basket with the lid. Chris drilled the clear plastic bowl, but it isn't needed.

Yep, just follow the recipe in the OP. The $1's that I cleaned (only 300 so far) needed about 2 minutes per batch in 8 cups of 40-43C water w/ 2 Tbl of the fake TSP
